Carey Dubbert

Carey Dubbert is a master musician on the Autoharp. He won the National Hammered Dulcimer Championships in Winfield, Kansas, and the International Autoharp Competition in Newport, PA. In 2008 Carey was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the California Autoharp Gathering. He is known for his clear and precise presentation of tunes.

Carey has performed concerts and conducted workshops at the California Autoharp Gathering, the Mountain Laurel Autoharp Gathering, the Sonoma County Folk Festival, the Willamette Valley Autoharp Gathering, the autoharp gathering at Cambria, and the Northern California Autoharp Club. He plays for local arts festivals and is a regular sharing his music at Alzheimer’s Respite and Senior Centers.

Workshops have provided Carey the opportunity to share his love of the autoharp with others. He has enjoyed the give and take of workshops, as well as talking about his particular approach.

Carey grew up in Rochester, Minnesota and graduated from the University of Minnesota. Carey did his graduate work at the Manhattan School of Music. While in New York City, he played both classical and jazz bassoon. For the past 45 years, he and his wife, Ellindale, have lived in Occidental, California.

For ten years Carey has been part of a trio, “West of Malarkey”. With Terry Hallowes playing concertina and fiddle and Lisa Mathiesen on tenor mandolin, banjo, and fiddle, they have an eclectic program of tunes that they perform for local events.
